The River

The Sava is one of the most beautiful rivers in Slovenia. It flows near the town of Bled, one of the country’s most famous tourist destinations. The stretch near Radovljica is a true paradise and extends over two sections with a total length of 41 kilometers. The fish stock includes rainbow trout, brown trout, grayling, and the undisputed king of these waters—the huchen. All of these species occur in this refuge in remarkable sizes and numbers. Especially for the endangered huchen, this river offers an environment of abundance, which is why this species, thanks to the biological richness, grows into true giants here. The density of huchen in this river is probably unique in Europe. Average sizes of caught fish are not uncommonly well over one meter. Since the 2015 season, the stretch has been predominantly catch and release. The Cast & Believe team exclusively supports catch and release for this endangered species.

The accommodations

There are various accommodation options (ranging from 3* to 5*), which can be booked flexibly according to preference. All guesthouses or hotels are located just a few minutes from the water. In addition, the river is well and safely suited for wading and can be reached quickly via established paths.

The season

The huchen season in particular begins on October 1 and ends on February 15.

The best time to target large huchen on the Sava is during the months of November, December, and January. If water levels are suitable, the fish are by far most active during this period.

Huchen lures and equipment

Huchen can be caught using all common lures (wobblers, huchen braids, soft plastics, etc.). Especially when fishing with a fly rod on days with clear water, the chances are by far the best.

Our specially developed range of lures—such as the now internationally well-known “Bad Angler” and “Lazy Frogfish” wobblers, sponge sculpins, flies, and other specialties—are available to you and can be purchased in advance and, in some cases, also on site.

In addition, if required, we can offer you an exclusive rod series produced solely for us, reflecting our 40 years of experience in huchen fishing.

If you do not have suitable equipment, rental gear is also available at a moderate price.

The fishing regulations:

Total catch and release along the entire stretch
Fishing is only permitted in the presence of a guide (legally required)
The minimum lure size is 10 centimeters to avoid catching trout
Barbless single hooks are required in Trophy Area A on the first 2 kilometers
Further details will be discussed personally
