Tara Canyon
The Tara Canyon is the deepest canyon in Europe and the second deepest in the world, surpassed only by the Grand Canyon in Colorado, USA.
Wild grayling from the Tara River
Such crystal-clear rivers require a special approach to fly fishing. To be successful, you need fine tackle, delicate presentation, and the right flies. During the summer months, fish can be very wary and selective, which presents an additional challenge for fly anglers. Often, the fish feed exclusively on tiny flies. But don’t worry—our guides are qualified fly tyers and experts in riverbank entomology.
Dreamlike pool on the Tara River
The Tara River is 140 kilometers long. Its water is exceptionally clear (quality class 1). The section of the river located within the national park offers top-class fishing with its countless pools.

Wild brown trout
The best dry flies are Blue Winged Olive (in various body colors and wing materials – CDC, poly wings, etc.), quills, midges, Griffith’s Gnat, Grizzly Palmer, Hexagenia, Sulphur, Red Spinner, and various sedges in hook sizes 12–20. The most successful hook size is #16.
You can use wet flies, nymphs, and streamers. Proven patterns on Montenegrin rivers include Pheasant Tail, Hare’s Ear, Hydropsyche pupa, various beadhead nymphs, and streamers such as the Muddler Minnow and Woolly Bugger.
Wild grayling from the Tara River
When fly fishing in Montenegro, everything is a bit smaller—at least when it comes to fly size. Fishing here is done with flies and nymphs in sizes 16 to 20. Every fish has to be earned, but the effort is rewarded with spectacular fights and flawless fish. Simply world-class!
Endemic trout from the Ljuca River
It is highly recommended for all passionate anglers to visit the waters of the Balkans, as the combination of scenery and fish stocks at each individual waterway truly deserves the distinction “particularly valuable.”
In the upper reaches of the river near the town of Kolašin, there is a 2-kilometer stretch reserved exclusively for fly fishing. Here, too, fish stocks are excellent—especially the giant grayling from the Mrtvica Gorge.
